THREE FIELDS is a collaboration between five organisations across India, South Africa, and the UK, bringing together three artists to collectively explore food systems, regenerative agricultural practices, and Indigenous knowledge through sustainable immersive technologies. Three Fields focuses on using sustainable digital production tools, and sets a new precedent for environmentally conscious creative digital practices. The artists commissioned for the work are Kaajal Modi in the UK, Deepa Reddy in India, and Samukelisiwe Dube in South Africa.
The artist is in residence at Unit 493 in Kirkgate Market for the duration of November 2025. The first workshop, on fermenting inks and dyes from food waste and spices, took place on 12/11/2025. The second workshop, which used the inks and dyes to create paper and textiles art, took place on 24/11/2025. The artist residency and workshops at Leeds Kirkgate Market allowed Kaajal to engage traders and customers into conversations about their relationships to food and spices. Participants were invited to share their stories over tea and artistic making, to explore their experiences and knowledge to do with salt, spices, seeds, plants and culture. As part of the residency, the artist recorded testimonials in the booth, and created collaborative artworks that will be used in the final showcases in India, South Africa and the UK in 2026.
THREE FIELDS is an international co-comission between Abandon Normal Devices, Arts Catalyst, Fak’ugesi, Fast Familiar and Unbox. Funded by the British Council’s International Collaboration Grants and supported using public funding by Arts Council England. To find out more about the project visit 3-fields.com
